Ethiopia Welena is something so special as a single estate from Ethiopia, where many other coffees origin from cooperatives. Tesfaye Bekele runs a big enough yard to produce and export himself, which means Johan & Nyström can buy coffee directly from him. The washed coffee provides the unmistakable floral notes of nectarine, citrus fruits and berries. The incredibly pure and complex flavor contributes to a coffee that has all the attributes that make us love coffee from Ethiopia.
Direct Trading & Welena Plantation
Johan & Nyström has a 3-year contract with Tesfaye covering Welena Plantation and sister farm Suke Quto. They are committed to buy at least 300 bags of their coffee per harvest, and pay 30 % above the Fair Trade price. Tesfaye promises in exchange to continue with organic farming and to the coffee will keep a grade of at least 84 points (a good specialty coffee quality). The pursuit, however, is much higher when a premium is paid if the coffee is a quality of over 86 points.
The Coffee plantation Welena and the sister farm Suke Quto located in Oromia, one of Ethiopia’s biggest regions. Farms located in a zone called in Guji Oromias southern part, local area called Shakiso, adjacent Sidama and Gedeo zone.
Coffee from Shakiso is unique from coffee grown in Sidamo or Yirgacheffe, although the general descriptions are similar; citrus, floral aroma in the washed coffee, and strawberry and tropical tones in the sun-dried. Coffee from the region is generally fruitier than coffee from Yirgahceffe and Sidamo. Soil is an explanation to this, the regional varieties another and the long fermentation – in the washed method – with all the sugar in mucilage, a third.
